The Framework For Statehood Or Sovereignty
Montevideo Convention
- Absolute Equality (Article 4): States are judicially equal, enjoy the same rights, and have equal capacity in international law. The votes and rights of a tiny island nation are theoretically equal to those of a global superpower.
- Non-Intervention (Article 8): "No state has the right to intervene in the internal or external affairs of another." This was a massive shift, particularly for Latin American nations trying to legally prevent the United States from militarily intervening in their domestic politics.
- The Non-Recognition of Force (Article 11): Signatories bound themselves not to recognize territorial acquisitions or special advantages obtained through military force or coercive diplomatic pressure. This laid the early groundwork for modern international laws against unlawful annexation.

A Permanent Population
There must be a group of people living there on a regular basis. It doesn't matter how few people there are, but they can't just be tourists passing through

A Defined Territory
There must be clear, physical borders marking the land. The country doesn't have to be massive, and it's okay if there are minor border disputes with neighbors, but the core territory must be recognizable.

A Government
There has to be a functioning political system or authority in charge that keeps order and makes laws.

The Capacity to Enter into Relations with Other States
The government must have the legal and practical ability to talk to, make treaties with, and do business with other countries.
